Highly accomplished ocean racing skipper and instructor Bob Beggs is to take the helm aboard Qingdao for its global Clipper 2015-16 Race campaign.

The former British Army commando led the winning team in The Times Clipper 2000 Round the World Race. “I am really looking forward to leading the Qingdao team. They have demonstrated a highly competitive spirit in their first two races and I will work with them to continue to develop their campaign to ensure they have a rewarding race experience.

Beggs, 55, is a successful ocean racing veteran. He achieved his first Atlantic crossing under sail in a Camper Nicholson ketch in 1988. He led Bristol Clipper to victory in The Times Clipper 2000 Race and is an experienced sailing instructor. Among his many racing campaigns are five Fastnet races as skipper, numerous Trans-Atlantic and Round Britain and Ireland races. In addition he has a wide range of activity interests which include diving, parachuting and skiing.

The Chinese city of Qingdao is the longest serving Team Sponsor and Host Port in Clipper Race history with the highly successful relationship spanning back to the 2005-06 edition of the race.

The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre was the venue for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the Clipper Race playing a vital role in ensuring the city was ready to host the world’s most prestigious sporting event.

When the Clipper Race fleet arrives in the Sailing City of Qingdao, in March 2016 it will be the sixth time the world’s longest yacht race has visited the Chinese city.

The relationship between Qingdao and the Clipper Race was further strengthened when in 2012 the fleet of twelve Clipper 70s was built in the city.

An intense programme of cultural and business promotional activities are planned during the fleet’s stay in Qingdao, allowing opportunities for crew to experience Chinese culture and hospitality.

A group of 16 ambassadors from Qingdao will also race on board the yacht round the world. Two ambassadors on each of the eight legs of the race will help to promote Qingdao and inspire the nation of China as they sail around the world. Qingdao Ambassador, Vicky Song became the first Chinese woman to circumnavigate the world during the 2013-14 edition the race.
